The milk dumpster is a district-wide recycling program where we now recycle all milk containers.

The bags, given to the entire district, are grocery bags that you take to the store instead of using and throwing away the plastic.

A timer was installed to the Mary Crapo and High School signs so that lights do not burn all night long.  This shuts off around 9:00 P.M. now saving the district approximately 16 to 18 hours worth of energy.

Completed in August 2008

Bamboo, which is considered a rapidly renewable resource, was used in the construction of our new high school cafe.

Completed in August 2008

Occupancy sensors have been installed in various buildings around the district starting in 2007.  They are installed in classrooms, offices, and all areas in a building.  These will continue to be installed as part of the Sustainability Task Force's initiatives.

Swartz Creek Community Schools contracted with a local vendor in 2008 to provide drinks.  Part of the agreement was removing all light bulbs from machines to save energy.  Machines ran their lights 24/7 and now the lights are always off while still providing cold drinks.

Drinking fountain timers were added to drinking fountains around the district so that when the building was not occupied, the water coolers would not be using any energy.

Completed June 2008

Replaced gymnasium lights at the High School, Gaines Elementary, and Syring Elementary.  Each light has an occupancy sensor saving the district an additional 20-30% in addition to the annual savings from upgrading to a fixture that uses almost half the energy as the old ones.

Completed August 2008

Energy Star roof installed at Syring Elementary and over the cafe and kitchen at the High School.

Completed August 2008

Old T-8 light fixtures that are fairly efficient were recycled from the cafe project and used in the stadium locker room and the maintenance huts.

Completed September 2008

We now recycle paper, plastic, and cardboard in every single building in the district.

Completed December 2008
